Are you a beginner guitarist who loves guitar but don't know where to start?
Are you an intermediate guitarist who can play well but wants to go to the next level?
Are you an adult or experienced player who is stuck in a rut with their playing and wants to find inspiration?
I provide guitar lessons for all levels of guitarists, beginner to advanced. Whether you want to learn your favourite songs, learn different styles of guitar, improve your technique, learn to read music or master improvisation skills, I can help you on the way to achieving your goals.
I have a large collection of resources and coupled with software such as Audacity and Logic, we can work on the areas of your playing which are stopping you from going to the next level.
Lessons take place in my home studio in Hillcrest and cost $35 for a half hour lesson and $70 for an hour.
I have amplifiers to plug in to so you only need to bring your electric if this is the guitar you prefer. I also have a number of electric guitars if you don't have one yourself.
Please contact me to organise a time for your first lesson.
Testimonials
For the past 2 years Andy has been tutoring my 2 boys on guitar. During this time not only have they flourished on their instrument but Andy has done such a great job in nurturing their love for music. My eldest boy has also achieved excellence endorsement in music at both NECEA levels 1 & 2 – I owe much of his success to Andy’s influence. Thanks so much Andy for everything you have done – they’ll definitely be coming back after the holidays.

In my mind, the best guitarist in any room is the one who is having the most fun! Andy has been teaching me jazz guitar for a year and has a gone long way to helping me become the best guitarist in the room. He got me out of a rut with my playing by challenging and expanding my technical capacity and instructing me on the theory behind it all (and done so in a way that is understandable, enjoyable and promotes new possibilities). Every lesson has opened a doorway to new ways of playing, listening and composing, and taking lessons with Andy has helped keep music a part of my daily life.

The very first time I saw Andy Smith play guitar was at a gig at the 1885 in Britomart some years ago. He blew me away with his musical language through his guitar. I knew there and then I wanted to take lessons from him. Andy is an awesome guitar tutor and has a great knowledge and understanding of music theory which he translates through technique and the application thereof. Whilst an amazing musician, guitarist, performer and teacher, he maintains his humility and keeps lessons fun. As a guitar tutor myself Andy continues to inspire me and has become my mentor forever challenging me to grow as a guitarist and nurture my love and passion for music.

Andy’s help in tutoring our son Elijah has been invaluable and has contributed to his success in passing his Level 1 and 2 NCEA music exams. Elijah finds his teaching style very easy to follow and Andy is a patient tutor. We highly recommend him.
